My dog is crazy. Absolutely crazy. She eats things she shouldn’t eat all the time, which constantly worries me. One time, I came home to find her dog name ID and her rabies tag all chewed up and the ring that held them on her collar was missing. I dialed the vet in tears. I thought I killed my pup. How could I leave ANYTHING in her crate with her? I felt so dumb and scared of what the vet would say: surgery.
To my relief, he told me to just feed her pumpkin. It will help with her upcoming upset tummy and make things, uh, come out faster (sorry, TMI, I know.) This worried me, though. In my experience, our puppy just did not like fruits or veggies at all. Much to my surprise though, she went absolutely bananas for the puree. She lapped up that pumpkin like no other. It was then that I realized that I might have created a pumpkin monster.
My dog now prefers her meals with a small spoonful of pumpkin. If she doesn’t get pumpkin, she whines and gives me the “cute eyes”. So, of course, I feed her addiction and give her pumpkin. It’s not bad for her, so I’m fine with doing this.
Since she is officially addicted, I began a search for pumpkin dog treats. This recipe combines two of her favorite things: pumpkin and peanut butter. And the verdict? Well, let’s just say when I open the fridge, this dog is HOPING I pull a treat out of the ziploc for her. 🙂 A big time winner, for sure…it will make your dogs go WILD!
Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
- Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.

Hahaha! Actually no! They are in the oven for so long, they sort of come out dry like biscotti. They smell sort of plain too, so I didn’t try them. 🙂
I have not with this recipe but did with another I made & it was not too bad. I think my daughter ate more treats than the dog did.
Oh I totally want to try these – too bad the only kind of baking I’ll probably like is for dogs…much easier (I’m not good with baking whatsoever)!
Brilliant! I’ve been looking for a good recipe for treats for my dog, and given his love of peanut butter, I’m pretty sure adding pumpkin will make these a huge hit!

What timing–my pooch is currently in recovery after having surgery yesterday to remove bits of her leather leash from her stomach. She ate the whole darn thing. I wish I could say she has learned her lesson, but she’s a dog! 🙂 We have definitely learned ours though.
Once she’s better I may need to whip up a batch of these treats for her.

This is great! We have a dog with major tummy troubles, so after trying several different foods and STILL she had loose “you know what” we got an article from our trainer about “people” foods that are good for dogs. Pumpkin was high on the list as was sweet potato. So for months we had a sweet potato, beet, broccoli mash that we added to her food that helped her a lot. Then she got bored of it. 🙁 Luckily we found an amazing food – Nature’s recipe Easy to digest, grain free, Salmon, sweet potato and pumpkin recipe! I’m praying this isn’t seasonal because after almost a year of trying different diet combos, and supplements our dog FINALLY has normal, consistent poop! But yea…it makes them go A LOT! LOL
Anyway, I’ve been looking for healthy dog treat recipes I can make myself instead of buying different ones all the time, and PB and pumpkin is right up their alley! Plus I was planning to make these cookies (http://annies-eats.com/2010/10/01/pumpkin-butterscotch-cookies/) this weekend anyway! I’ll make cookies for me and hubby, and cookies for the pups!
