Rounding some things up….

This morning I was greeted with beautiful Fall-like weather. I was wondering if I was dreaming for a second, because I’m just so used to going outside at 6am to hot, sticky nastiness. Yep, even at 6am. Man, I hope that weather comes back soon. I don’t know how much of the hot, sticky mess I can take anymore!

With that glimpse of the Fall, it reminded me that Fall always makes me think of a change, and well, some things are about to change around here. 🙂

A new venture...

Any guess as to what those fabric cuts will be used for? Nothing to do with quilts, that’s for sure. These fabric cuts are going to be made into dog bandanas. Ever since I brought my dog to the groomer and got her a bandana, I got inspired. I think she looks adorable in one, but paying almost $10 for one bandana was really crazy to pay. So, I figured there had to be a better, CHEAPER way to make this work!

These bandanas aren’t all for Millie, though. They are going to be in an ETSY SHOP! That’s right…The Nifty Foodie is opening an Etsy shop. 🙂 I’m really excited about this, and I hope this little idea brings on at least one sale! 🙂

While I’m working on my little ol’ future shop, here’s the status of a couple of quilts I’ve been working on, which are actually both almost done!

This is the charm pack quilt that I mentioned a while back. It’s all sandwiched up and ready to be quilted. Wahoo! The quilt was done in this charm pack and has Kona cotton (in Snow) in between the rows.

This is an Amy Butler quilt (fabrics are here) that I made in a class. OMGosh…I absolutely LOVE this quilt. I quilted it by doing the “stitch in the ditch” technique, and can’t wait to bind it.

A bunch of randoms…

I think I might start posting about things that are on my mind, but the subjects alone aren’t worthy of their own post, if you know what I mean.

  • Blogs usually have a niche…this blog doesn’t. I don’t expect to ever have a huge following, because I can’t find one thing to write about and roll with it, life-wise. One week, you’ll get a post about sewing, the next, a post about how my dog ::dings:: wine glasses before every meal. It’s just random, and I’m sorry there’s no overall theme here. (Thanks for reading…)

 

  • Why do failed politicians write books? Do that many people really care?

 

  • I won a yard of fabric from here. I’m pretty darn happy, but how in the heck will I choose just ONE!?

 

  • I’d love to go to BlogHer some day, and just be a starstruck crazy blogger gal trying to fit in. I think I’d be a babbly mess around the Pioneer Woman, but she’d love me, right? I mean she did tweet to me, once! We’re totally BFF’s!

 

  • I entered to win some free pet photography from this amazing photographer in Baton Rouge. Feel free to enter, but don’t beat me, OK? Millie needs pretty pictures!

 

  • Right now, I want to make a weekend of canning food gifts with summer produce like Tracy of SugarCrafter is doing, but I don’t know where I’d store all of the goodness right now.

 

  • I want to own an Etsy shop at least half as successful as Gussy one day.

 

  • I bought 1 work shirt, 2 soap dispensers, 1 eyeshadow and 2 packs of cupcake liners with less than $10 out of pocket this weekend. Mega coupon win!

 

  • I quit Weight Watchers, because my leader was a 60 year old woman who talked about cooking with grand-kids all meeting. I couldn’t relate. I’m still the most I’ve ever weighed. I need motivation.

 

  • Can it be Christmas already? I’m ready.

Thinking ahead…

I can’t believe it’s almost ::gulp:: September! It’s almost pumpkin spice frappuchino time, football season, cooler weather and well, time (for me) to start thinking about the holidays.

I can’t help it. I really can’t. I love the holiday season in an unhealthy obsessive way. Hubs will jokingly put on Elf at random times, and when I hear the opening credits, I can’t get the song out of my head for a solid 2 days. Heck, now it’s in my head. Ahh Buddy the Elf! 🙂

Since I am now sewing, I really really want to stay true to one of my 101 goals.

I can’t believe I have less than a year to complete those goals, too! Eek!

Goal #6:  buy handmade or make all Christmas gifts for family and friends one year

It’s terribly ambitious, I know, but I think I can actually swing this. Not giving away who gets what, but here are some tutorials/ideas.

A new addition

This weekend, my dog got jealous. Mad jealous. Something was taking up her precious play space, and well, she wasn’t going to have that happen! So, she stared it down, I guess hoping that her eyes would turn into lasers or something and burn this new intrusion into dust.

I bought a table this weekend on Craigslist. Not just any table, but a sewing table. I do already own this table, but it doesn’t look much like furniture, and I thought that a new table in the guest/craft room would look much more welcoming than my current table.

As you can see, it’s a little rough looking, and it’s totally sitting on Millie’s play rug as we work on it. She’s an angry pup.

Hubs went to a local hardware store and bought an orbital sander. Look at the gorgeous wood that was hiding underneath!

Now, the dilemma. Originally, I was inspired by Heather Bailey’s studio furniture and thought I could paint this a gorgeous turquoise color and distress it slightly to give it an antiqued look. However, the hubs mentioned that her furniture that had a lot of detail that made the paint job look awesome. Also, now seeing this wood underneath, I want to stain it (a la Young House Love).

Now, the problem is, the table-top folds out revealing a drawer for the sewing machine to sit in, but that drawer is veneer, not solid wood. We’re sure it’s plastic veneer, so you can’t sand that down to reveal bare wood, meaning it can’t be stained, but possibly painted. I’m thinking of staining the wood that you can see, and when you fold out the table, it reveals a fun painted color (where the veneer is)? What do you think I should do? I really need help/advice on this.

The Cooking Channel Likes Me

So, last week, I got an email from someone at The Cooking Channel. They mentioned that they are featuring food blogger’s pictures of Julia Child’s recipes and asked if I would be interested in letting them feature my picture of Julia’s Boeuf Bourguignon. Of course I said yes, but didn’t think anything would happen, since so many bloggers are great photographers.

I did, however, like a dork, squee around the house and call my hubs and mom about it! 🙂

I checked The Cooking Channel on Monday and this is what I see. The prompt I’m pointing to says “Food Bloggers Cooking Julia“. I hold my breath…

Starting Early…a Christmas Quilt Swap!

Oh yes, you read that correctly. I’m thinking about Christmas. With this sweltering Louisiana heat, it seems hard, but lately, all I can think of is cooler weather, a kitchen smelling of cinnamon and a Christmas tree adorned with presents underneath.

Since starting my sewing hobby last November, I’ve been thinking about the day when I could add handmade Christmas decor to the house. Last Christmas, I was lucky if I was able to make a tote bag, much less a Christmas quilt.

My blogging friend and fellow ‘bee, Jennifer of Moonlight and Magnolias, also sews and quilts. She actually brought up this Christmas quilt idea , since quilting has become such a fun hobby!

We want to involve you guys: our readers. How, you ask? A centralized quilt block swap! Are you intrigued? I sure hope so! This is going to be fun!

Now, here’s the deets. This is the quilt block we will be making, which is from Moda Bake Shop by Doug Leko. While that quilt has 35 blocks, we don’t want to make this super daunting on every participant (35 blocks is  a lot to take on and that makes a huge quilt). So, this will be a 12 block quilt.

As you can see, the quilt blocks themselves are fairly simple, so most quilters can participate and end up with a great quilt in the end!

Each participant would make 12 quilt blocks (using Christmas-y quilters cotton…there’s tons of fun prints out there, so GO WILD!) and send them to us by October 15th (you have plenty of time). Please  include a paper name tag pinned to the back of EACH your blocks, so the recipient will know who else has generously swapped. Name tags should have your first name, city and state, and blog if you have one.

You would then take your finished blocks to the post office without sealing the package. Have them weigh your package and buy that amount of postage, plus $.20 to make sure, and stick that on your return envelope. Place that envelope in with the blocks and send it on its way.

Once we receive all of the blocks, we will assemble the new kits of 12 blocks and send them your way. You should get your package by the November 1st.

After that, it’s up to you to make the quilt. When you’re done with the quilt, send us a picture of your finished project by December 15th, and we’ll do a quilt block swap round-up on our blogs!

Since Jennifer and I are participating, all we need are 10 more people to make this quilt block swap happen! If you are interested, just leave a comment here with your email address by September 15th. To keep shipping simple, we ask that participants must live in the continental U.S. The first 10 commenters on either blog will be in. Please only comment if you will truly commit to this swap, so everyone will end up with their 12 blocks in the end. 🙂

If Heaven made me breakfast…

French Toast

I know what you’re thinking…what’s with the title? Well, writing challah french toast with subtle notes of orange drenched in orange berry sauce is a little bit lengthy for a blog title, don’t you think?

So, I decided if Heaven could cook me breakfast in the morning, I imagine this is what they would serve. Delicious, fruity french toast. There’s something about french toast. It’s just so simple, yet yummy and you can flavor it any way you want. Versatile little breakfast you are, my french toast.

One of my fellow Weddingbee pals (Yes, I know I got married over a year ago. Once a bee, always a bee darnit!), who writes the blog I love you much, came up with this recipe. This recipe is the reason I made challah and it was worth it. Make the challah/buy the challah…whatever it takes. This bread redefines french toast, folks. Seriously…you don’t even have to make THIS french toast. Just make any french toast with this bread from now on. You will NOT regret it!

Challah French Toast with Orange Berry Sauce

Ingredients for toast:

  • 1 loaf challah
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 cup reduced fat milk
  • 3 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. orange zest
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil

Ingredients for sauce:

  • 1 bag of frozen strawberries
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp. orange zest
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tbsp. flour
  • pinch of salt

(optional: some powdered sugar for dusting)

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients for the berry sauce in a small pot on medium low heat and allow to cook down, stirring/slightly mashing berries every few minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees.
  3. Whisk all ingredients (except for the challah) in a large bowl until well incorporated.
  4. Slice challah into 1/2 inch slices.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet at medium heat.
  6. Soak 3-4 pieces of challah in the egg mixture for 30 seconds on each side (until the bread is fully soaked but not soggy). Shake off excess mixture and place on the skillet (cook 2-3 minutes on each side until barely brown).
  7. When finished on the skillet, place on a parchment lined cookie sheet in an oven to keep warm/finish the toast.
  8. Repeat 6 & 7 until all toast is done. Keep in the oven an extra 10 minutes.
  9. Serve with berry sauce and powdered sugar. Enjoy!

Happy Together

This weekend, I drove to my family’s home right outside of New Orleans. I decided since my family has half an acre of land and a happy 10 year old lab eager for some lovin’, that my puppy would probably love an outside play date.

These two had a blast! I couldn’t stop smiling, because they were just so happy! I was surprised their tails didn’t wag right off!

For a 10 year old dog, Dixie still has some energy and even had time to give me a “thank you” smile. 🙂

At one point, I decided to bring a bag of treats outside, shake it and this was the reaction. FULL SPEED AHEAD! Just look at those ears haha!

Of course after a treat/water break, they went back to their fun.

Then, since Millie is only 9 months old, she ended up spazzing out, aka running in fast circles around the yard. Dixie decided to instead just take in some sunlight and pose for the camera. 🙂

Challah

I’ve never heard of challah before I started this food blog. My knowledge of bread was sandwich bread, french/po’ boy bread (of course), and dinner rolls.

Around the holidays, I remember reading about this bread on many blogs, and thought it looked divine. Heck, what am I saying, MOST breads to me look divine. I’m a carb lover, that’s for sure!

I actually didn’t plan on making this. I wanted to purchase this bread at a store, because my blogging friend sent me a recipe for some killer looking french toast, and I wanted to surprise my husband/sister (who came to visit) with a nice Sunday breakfast. (Post to come on this fantastic french toast soon!) However, I live near a Target and a Wal-Mart. I don’t think they know what challah is…it wasn’t there. It was too late to go across town to the swanky part of town to check Whole Foods, too. So, I had to crank out the mixer, locate the yeast in my pantry and make this bread happen. My craving for french toast was too strong to ignore.

So, at 10:30 on a Saturday evening, I made this dough. I wanted to halve it, because I’m fairly positive my waistline would be disappointed after a snack fest involving the second loaf. The dough was rising while my husband, sister and I watched Avatar. Avatar and dough proofing: perfect Saturday, eh?

Anyway, the dough really didn’t rise as much as the recipe made it sound. Perhaps directly halving yeast is a no-no? Eh, regardless, this bread was awesome! The only issue I had was making a pretty braid, but I’m not sweating over it. 🙂

Makes 2 loaves

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 packages active dry yeast (1 1/2 tablespoons)
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup olive or vegetable oil, plus more for greasing the bowl
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 8 to 8 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in 1 3/4 cups lukewarm water.
  2. Whisk oil into yeast, then beat in 4 eggs, one at a time, with remaining sugar and salt. Gradually add flour. When dough holds together, it is ready for kneading. (You can also use a mixer with a dough hook for both mixing and kneading, but be careful if using a standard size KitchenAid–it’s a bit much for it, though it can be done.)
  3. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. Clean out bowl and grease it, then return dough to bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until almost doubled in size. Dough may also rise in an oven that has been warmed to 150 degrees then turned off. Punch down dough, cover and let rise again in a warm place for another half-hour.
  4. At this point, you can knead the raisins into the challah, if you’re using them, before forming the loaves. To make a 6-braid challah, either straight or circular, take half the dough and form it into 6 balls. With your hands, roll each ball into a strand about 12 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. Place the 6 in a row, parallel to one another. Pinch the tops of the strands together. Move the outside right strand over 2 strands. Then take the second strand from the left and move it to the far right. Take the outside left strand and move it over 2. Move second strand from the right over to the far left. Start over with the outside right strand. Continue this until all strands are braided. For a straight loaf, tuck ends underneath. For a circular loaf, twist into a circle, pinching ends together. Make a second loaf the same way. Place braided loaves on a greased cookie sheet with at least 2 inches in between.
  5. Beat remaining egg and brush it on loaves. Either freeze breads or let rise another hour.
  6. If baking immediately, preheat oven to 375 degrees and brush loaves again. Sprinkle bread with seeds, if using. If freezing, remove from freezer 5 hours before baking.
  7. Bake in middle of oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden. (If you have an instant read thermometer, you can take it out when it hits an internal temperature of 190 degrees.) Cool loaves on a rack.

Note: Any of the three risings can be done in the fridge for a few hours, for more deeply-developed flavor. When you’re ready to work with it again, bring it back to room temperature before moving onto the next step.

Caring a little more…

I’ve had a blog since 2005. That’s a long time in the Internet world, y’all.

I remember my first blog, which was on a LiveJournal-like platform, and I really can’t even remember the name. I used to blog about things that no one cared about: college classes, boys, discovering my independence, etc. I moved over to LiveJournal, because my friends were there. My LiveJournal is still online with a Christmas looking theme and an avatar with Will Ferrell from Elf, but I’m too embarrassed to share the link. I look back on it from time to time and laugh at the things I used to care about in the college days.

I wonder if I’ll ever look back on this blog and laugh at what I cared about in my 20s.

One thing I’ve noticed through the years, is that I carefully plan/care about my posts more. No more posts about the professor who embarrassed me in class or the fact that I had a faceplant in front of the student union. It’s rare that I post about a day in the life here, because, well, I doubt that readers would care about that.

When I started my food blog in 2008, all I cared about was finding good recipes and keeping a record of them, so when I was married, I could totally cook something up for us. My food adventures took place in my parents’ house for a good year or so. The pictures didn’t matter to me…it was the recipes that I cared about, obviously.

Example: One of my pictures from my first ever food blog post. I thought it was an excellent picture of bowtie pasta and meatballs, but I didn’t care to take 20 pictures of the food…I just wanted to eat.

A year later, at what would be my husband and I’s house (his house at the time), this is what I took a picture of. Oh yeah, Italian again. At least this time, I focused in on the food. At this point, I was getting a little better, and had a good steady following, so I wanted to give my readers fairly decent pictures of recipes.

One year later

Then, around April 2010, I bought a dSLR and moved to my own domain. I really started developing a passion for food blogging and decided my own URL was the next step, along with a fancy camera for great pictures.

When I got my camera, ultimately, I wanted to be able to play with settings and make my photos eventually drool-worthy. Right when I took it out of the box, I immediately put it in “manual” mode and got to work. It took me a while, but check out one of my favorite photos (which was taken in July 2010).

It’s funny how much I care now about blogging. It’s an everyday thing for me, and I love networking/talking with other bloggers about what works for them. I know I will never be Bakerella or Pioneer Woman, but it always gives me confidence when I see my hits rise and my readership increase. 🙂

Now, I know this is a post about my food blog, mainly, but I will say that this blog has also become important to me. I know this blog will never be as popular as the food blog, since there’s no real theme here (and themes usually mean a stronger readership), but I still love posting here about hobbies, housewife-ness and other topics that pop in my mind. I’m not sure if this blog will ever have a theme, like food, sewing or gardening. I like that it’s fairly random in its own way, and it offers me the freedom to blog about whatever. 🙂
